SLA is governed by a board of directors elected by the membership (see below). The board has the power and authority to manage the association’s property and to regulate and govern its affairs. The board determines the policies of the association and takes such actions as it considers necessary to carry out the objectives of the association.
Open Board Meetings
The board holds Open Board Meetings each month. Each open meeting will last 90 minutes. The final 10 minutes of each meeting will include time for member questions about board agenda items. SLA members are invited to attend open board meetings, but must register attend.
Town Halls
SLA town hall meetings provide a connection point for the board and SLA members to discuss specific topics. SLA members are invited to attend town halls, but must register to attend.
Current SLA Board of Directors
Hildy Dworkin, President
Hildy Dworkin has been the librarian for the NYC Department of Social Services since 1999 and earned her MLS at Queens College in NYC. The library was established in 1947, but closed in 1995, and so it was Hildy’s job to reestablish the library and bring it into the twenty-first century. While this has been her only job as an information professional, Hildy has had the opportunity to wear a few hats while managing the library, including handling press for the agency. This experience showed her a whole different side to the information world. This role afforded her the opportunity to learn communication and messaging for an agency with over 10,000 employees and she attributes rising into that leadership position to what she learned from her SLA mentors and that SLA provided a safe place hone leadership skills.
Hildy joined SLA in 2000. After reading about all the communities she chose Solo Librarians knowing that since she was a solo and a new librarian with no experience, she was going to need the support and knowledge of others. Because experienced professionals in SLA taught her that fostering relationships within your organization was essential to success, she earned a seat at the design table when the agency moved to a new location even though she was not a manager.
Hildy’s first SLA leadership role was secretary for Solos and later became chair when the division was going through a difficult time recruiting leaders and so she remained chair until Solos once again had a strong leadership team. Locally, she volunteered to be on the planning committee for the NYC community’s biannual conference. She served as a member and later chair of the Public Relations Advisory Council and was as a director on SLA’s Board of Directors. Hildy cherishes the rich history of SLA. It is important honor and preserve its legacy and leaders who built this association and set the tone as a trusted community. She believes a combination of this foundation and looking for new opportunities to grow will create a robust future.
